Sleeping Dingo, Fraser Island. The dingoes on Fraser Island are the purest strain of Dingo left in the world due to their long isolation from domestic dogs. This dingo was a regular picnic table sleeper. She died a few months later when a goanna bit her on the foot and the resulting infection made her lame and as a consequence she either starved to death or was killed by a rival female. It is easy to make the mistake when seeing this photo or even dingos in general to think they are cute and cuddly. The reality is totally different. They are wild animals. The brutality of their world can shock you when you come face to face with it. I have seen dingoes being killed by other dingoes in territorial disputes, brother and sisters killing and eating their own siblings and, the most difficult to watch, those weaker dingoes that starve to death when they get kicked out of the territory they grew up in. These are some of the necessary evils required to prevent overpopulation on a relatively small block of land. |
